    Night Navigation Training Wicklow Level 1

    Want to take your navigation confidence up a notch? If you’re a beginner or experienced then we can take your night navigation confidence to the next level.

    Your instructor, Ronan Mullen, has 23 years experience leading and teaching in the mountains both at home and abroad. Add to that over 20 of experience with a very busy mountain rescue team and holding the professional International Mountain Leader qualification means that you’ll learn from an expert.

    Level 1 Night Navigation

    This course is ideal for those with little to no night navigation experience. Maybe you’ve completed your Mountain Skills training and want to keep your skills sharp or you’re going for assessment. Ideal also for those that have some experience in navigation but lack the confidence in poor conditions or at night. You should have a basic understanding of maps: contours, scale, features. You should also know how to take a take and follow basic bearings. Ratio 1:6.

    What you’ll need to bring:

    • Full rainwear
    • Snacks
    • Hat & gloves
    • Extra fleece
    • Good boots
    • Headtorch and extra batteries
    • Basic first aid kit: blister pads, roller bandage, pain killers, plasters
    • Map- Eastwest Lugnaquilla/Glendalough (these are available to buy at our location)
    • We can lend you a compass for the course but you can also buy them in-store.

    Night Navigation Training

    When will the next course take place?

    At the moment we are only providing private sessions for individuals or groups of up to 6 people. This costs €300/evening.

    What time does the night navigation course start?

    Roughly 6:30pm, depending on sunset.

    Do participants need experience before attending this navigation course?

    For Level 1 you need to have the basic skills. For Level 2 it’s essential that you can take and follow bearings, understand map detail and know how to pace.

    I’ve never navigated before, is this for me?

    Yes, but you may find that some things will go over your head! 

    How many participants will there be on this navigation course?

    Level 1: 6 participants per instructor

    Where is the navigation course run?

    This course is run from our base in Glendalough, we’ve plenty of parking and direct access to the mountains. Google map location.

    Do we provide private courses?

    Yes, we certainly do. We can run this course for you 1 on 1 or for your group. We can also run the Mountain Skills course all over Ireland.
