Kieran Creevy, Adventure.ie expedition chef and MSR ambassador demonstrates how to make a simple, but nutritious, flaxseed flatbread to accompany your camp meals. Take your camp craft a notch higher!
Flaxseed Flatbread
The following recipe is based on an outdoor cooking masterclass held by us, Adventure.ie in conjunction with MSR stoves. Expedition chef, Kieran Creevy walked participants through this simple, but tasty recipe.
Stove used:
MSR Windburner Stove. Chosen for its simmering and fast cooking capabilities.
Accessories used:
- - Windburner ceramic skillet
- - Small camp chopping board
- - Wooden spatula
- - Large dry bag
Flaxseed Flatbread
Ingredients:
- - Around a cup of flour (either bread flour or plain) - use a metal camp cup or eyeball it
- - Salt - a good few twists of the grinder. (I counted 10!)
- - Good glug of olive oil
- - Additions/Flavourings- we used flaxseed, could add chilli flakes, garlic, nuts, foraged herbs etc.
- - Water- eyeball it, adding slowly. Kieran also added water from a jar of picked onions for added flavour.
- - Grated cheese if desired
Method:
- 1. Add flour and salt to your dry bag and mix with hands from outside.
- 2. Add a decent glug of olive oil and gently mix from the outside - don't knead - until you get a breadcrumb like texture.
- 3. Add about a quarter cup of flaxseed or whatever additions you fancy and mix gently again.
- 4. Add water slowly, using your hands on the outside of the bag to squeeze and mix the mixture. Your objective now is to knead and form a nice bread dough.
- 5. Make small balls and flatten each ball in your hand or on a board to form mini flatbreads. Flour the board or your hand as necessary.
- 6. Some people added some grated cheese here to one side and folded over, flattening again.
- 7. Light your stove and set to a medium heat.
- 8. Place your flatbreads around the pan, leaving a gap in the centre (too hot there). There's no need to oil the skillet as your bread has oil in it already. Your MSR windburner ceramic skillet should hold about 3 of these.
- 9. Turn when underside is cooked.
- 10.Serve alongside your main meal and enjoy!

Of course, you could measure the dry ingredients out at home and carry them in your drybag so you're ready to go. We prefer using a drybag over even compostable food bags for their longevity and multiple uses. Just be sure to wash it cafefully before your trip.
Wash your drybag out afterwards and hang to dry for re-use. Use a campsite or campervan sink if you have access to one or following the washing up ethics found on page 18 of the Leave No Trace skills and ethics handbook.
